Summer 2014 Minority Clerkship Program Winds Up

Twenty-five 1Ls and 2Ls from Capital University Law School and Moritz School of Law are completing their clerkships that began for most in late May. Employers from government, law firms and corporations provided positions, joining past efforts that have generated an estimated 6.5 million dollars in salaries for 724 students since the program’s inception in 1987.

Seventy-seven percent of the employers received their first or second choice of students in the program loosely modeled since 2012 on medical school residency placement. The change has been well-received by employers and students alike with this comment representative of the employer sentiments: “By all accounts we felt that the new format provided employers with the level of involvement in interviewing and candidate selection that allowed us to find the perfect fit. This was by far the best experience we have had with the program (both with the process and with the candidate) and our selected candidate exceeded our expectations by a large margin.”

Students gain valuable insight into the profession and their abilities by interviewing with up to six employers of their choice, in hopes of being selected for the summer experience. The sponsoring Minorities in the Law Committee, co-chaired by Megan Gonzalez and Yan Chen in 2014, prepare candidates for possible placements with employers. This begins with information meetings held at each law school, followed by an intensive orientation program, including preparation of a writing sample and providing a bridge to interact with local diverse bars and the Columbus Bar Summer Associates Training program. In recent years 38% of the participants of each class remain in Central Ohio after graduation, increasing the pool of diverse candidates available to join our legal community.
