Implicit Bias and the Legal Profession

What are implicit biases? They are attitudes and stereotypes that we are unaware of but still affect our behavior according to Professor Jerry Kang, a nationally recognized legal expert on implicit bias and the law. Prof. Kang will provide a scientific exploration of how these subtle biases can influence hiring, social interactions and evaluations in organizations in ways that undermine productivity, teamwork, and a basic sense of fairness. He will be joined by Cheryl Staats, lead author of the Kirwan Institute’s State of the Science Implicit Bias Review and thus an expert in the field, in a CLE presentation on March 6 from 3:00-5:00pm at the Columbus Bar. Both will discuss how a more creative, nuanced, and comprehensive approach to understanding inclusion can help drive real change.

This ground-breaking seminar is presented by the Columbus Bar Managing Partners Diversity Initiative as one program in the Thought Leadership Series with a goal of providing tools and concepts to assist law firm management in creating a truly interwoven and inclusive environment that effectively uses the talents of all its members.
