New Lawyers Committee Plans Busy Year
Engaged. Enthusiastic. A dynamic group of attorneys. That’s how our New Lawyers co-chairs, Laura Hartnett and Celia Kilgard, described members of their committee during a recent planning session. To meet energy of the group, Hartnett and Kilgard have planned numerous events for the coming year all designed to connect members to one another and the community. Here's just a short preview of what you can expect from your committee:
Lunchtime meetings the third Tuesday of every month at the CBA. Each meeting features a speaker on a different topic. This year, the committee is focusing on you as a whole person and how to balance your time, energy, and life in relation to your burgeoning career. Speakers will present and dialogue with you about time management, reducing stress, and increasing resilience.
Happy hours and breakfasts the first Thursday of every month. We alternate each month between a breakfast (courtesy of the CBA) or a happy hour (appetizers courtesy of the CBA). These are informal, smaller group events to get to know others in the community and just catch up over coffee or a drink.
Monthly special events. This year, look forward to: a distillery tour and tasting; a night at the Columbus Blue Jackets with the CPA Young Professionals group; a night at Shadowbox to see Spamalot; learn to curl with the Columbus Curling Club (back by popular demand!), and much, much more.
Street Legal volunteer program. Local attorneys teach informal classes to kids on general information about many of the common legal issues faced by young people today. Topics include police searches, cell phone contracts, sexting, employment issues, and others. It's an easy way to give back and educate the future generations.
Softball. Each spring the committee team, Hits and Runs, takes the field for a ten game season and tournament in the Lawyers League. Athletes of all skill levels are welcome and team registration begins in late winter.
Plus, door prizes including a tablet for attending events.
